We all feel we have done it, enjoyed it but no need to do again, esp at the price nowadays. It would have been nice for the kids to go to the top but obv the time of year was prohibitive. I understand post covid that it needs money to survive but the cost to go up means a family of 4 (teens classed as adults) aren't going to afford to pay for all the added extras. I felt this visit was all about the money.
When we visited many years ago it was all about the railway. But I think I'd rather pay less and have the option of paying for hot drink/mallows if wanted.

They lengthen the trip by giving free hot choc and marshmallow toasting. In April (winter) the train doesn't go the top. But if you have young children it might be cool to do at least once. Due to the price point for my family of four cost a little over $400 we will not do it a second time. You can drive up the mountain for a fraction of the cost if you are brave enough to drive on that very slim Road. There are no bathrooms on the train make sure you go before you depart! This was a very good one time experience if you've never done it I highly suggest it, but only if you really love trains and sites.
It was about 90° at the base when we get on the train and it was probably close to 60 by the time we get up to the top, very windy very chilly. Anybody going should know they are at the summit for approximately 45 minutes and you should dress accordingly. This train ride is not for anybody who's afraid of heights. Our Brake Man was awesome very funny very laid back. The two seat side does not have as good views. Definitely purchase your tickets in advance and if you like views and not afraid of heights you want to be on the three seat side. First off easy to get to not hard to find even with loss of cell service. Last year we drove up the mountain, I wanted to try something a little different as I love train rides. Although somewhat difficult to standup in my seat because of the extreme angle of incline, I was able to shoot unobstructed 4K video with my iPhone most the way of the track all the way to the top. I was the envy of most everyone in our rail car because of my front seat with my own window in the front and side window to the left. Washington covered in spectacular snow and ice! We were told that the view at the top was 130 miles and the temperature with wind chill was 3 degrees.
